Repertoire of Techniques in Art

The visual arts include several different categories for the budding artist to experiment with. Each category uses a particular set of materials, tools and techniques in order to create a work of art. Before attempting to create an art piece in the specific category, artists should explore what technique is most suitable for their style and skill level.
  1. Painting

    • Painting is a visual art in which artists apply paint to a surface. The artists will conceptualize and paint in an expressive manner to create the artwork. They can employ various techniques to create their painting. Watercolor painting is a method by which artists apply pigments thinned with water, creating transparent colors, usually onto to paper. Impasto painting is a technique where painters lay a thick coat of paint onto a surface. The end result is a painting with added texture, light reflectivity and expressiveness. Finger painting is a technique in which a person's hands and fingers are used instead of a brush.

    Photography

    • Photography is a visual art that uses a camera to create an image. The image is then developed and shared with the public as art. Several techniques are commonly used in photography. Digital photography is the practice of recording digital images onto the computer using an digital camera. The digital images can be manipulated on the computer using specialized software. Color photography is a technique in which cameras create color images. The earliest cameras created monochrome images. Some photographers continue to create black-and-white images for their timeless look.

    Sculpturing

    • Sculpturing is the process of creating three-dimensional art from materials such as clay, plastic or stone. Artists use different techniques to create the sculpture, depending on the material. Carving is a technique used to cut and shape wood into a form or image. Stone carving involves using a solid block of stone and reducing it until the stone resembles a structure or three-dimensional image. Molding is a technique in which a liquid material (such as glass, metal or clay slip) is placed inside a hollow mold. The liquid hardens and adopts the shape of the mold. Clay modeling is a technique by which the artist shapes clay or wax with his hands into sculpture.

    Printmaking

    • Printmaking is the production of an image onto paper, wood or fabric using a variety of techniques. Lithography is a technique where ink is applied to a printing surface that already contains a grease-treated image. The blank areas of the surface hold moisture and reject the ink. The inked surface is printed on paper or a rubber cylinder. Etching is a technique that creates prints from an acid-coated metal plate. The plate contains the image in an intricate arrangement of lines. Ink is placed on the plate, and the plate is placed on the paper, thereby transferring the image.
