Why was the Baroque period called Baroque?

There are several theories about the origin of the term "Baroque". One theory is that it comes from the Portuguese word "barroco", which means "irregular pearl" or "oddly shaped pearl". This term was used to describe the irregular shapes and forms that were characteristic of Baroque art and architecture. Another theory is that the term comes from the French word "baroque", which means "elaborate" or "exaggerated". This term was used to describe the highly decorated and elaborate style of Baroque art and architecture. Finally, some scholars believe that the term comes from the Latin word "barbarus", which means "foreign" or "uncouth". This term was used to describe the non-classical and unconventional style of Baroque art and architecture.
