Find or create portraits for your Andy Warhol style project. Print them gray scale if from a computer. If photocopying photos, copy in black and white. Head or head and shoulders poses work best for this project. Print or copy on 8x10 or 5x7 quality paper. The next step requires adhering glue to the paper so extremely thin, low quality paper is not a good choice.
Use clear kids' glue to create an outline "relief drawing" of the portrait by going over all the important lines (head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, neck, shirt if visible)with a thin line of glue. Take care to create the hair with multiple lines for maximum texture in the relief rubbing later. Eyes should be outlined in detail...eye socket, pupil, eyebrow. Place the glue relief in safe place to dry completely without disruption.
Andy Warhol's famous Marilyn portraits consisted of identical poses in different colors. Create your portraits in colors of your choice using a rubbing technique. Place plain white paper over the glue lines from Step 2. Keep the paper from slipping while you rub over the entire portrait with colored pencils or oil pastels. Each portrait rubbing might consist of one different color or create rubbings in different color schemes (warm colors, cool colors, primary colors or any color scheme). When creating color schemes, simply rub over different areas of the portrait with different colors.
Finish the Andy Warhol style art by arranging the portraits together to form a rectangular or square grid. Mount together on another surface or simply hang them in this arrangement. The number of portrait rubbings arranged together depends on the size of display you wish to create.
