The History of Wang Center in Boston

One of the premiere performing arts complexes in the United States, the Wang Center boasts a storied history rich with artistic significance and achievements. Although things have changed greatly over the years, this breathtaking center still serves as Boston's definitive cultural landmark.
  1. Metropolitan Theater

    • The center originally opened in 1925 as the Metropolitan Theater, a majestic movie palace complete with marble design and grand chandeliers.

    Wang Center Namesake

    • In 1983, the center's namesake, Dr. An Wang, contributed millions of dollars to restore the decrepit theater, ushering in an important era of revitalization.

    Performing Arts

    • Over the years the Wang Theater has played host to a slew of first-rate professional productions including various Broadway musicals, operas and ballets.

    Expansion

    • In 1996 the Wang Center obtained control of the Shubert Theater, in addition to forming partnerships with the Boston Ballet and Boston Lyric Opera.

    Citigroup

    • In 2006 Citigroup Inc. obtained the naming rights to the center which was aptly renamed the Citi Performing Arts Center.
