The center originally opened in 1925 as the Metropolitan Theater, a majestic movie palace complete with marble design and grand chandeliers.
In 1983, the center's namesake, Dr. An Wang, contributed millions of dollars to restore the decrepit theater, ushering in an important era of revitalization.
Over the years the Wang Theater has played host to a slew of first-rate professional productions including various Broadway musicals, operas and ballets.
In 1996 the Wang Center obtained control of the Shubert Theater, in addition to forming partnerships with the Boston Ballet and Boston Lyric Opera.
In 2006 Citigroup Inc. obtained the naming rights to the center which was aptly renamed the Citi Performing Arts Center.
