How to Collect Chokin Art

Chokin engravings were originally used in decorating ancient Japanese temples, shrines and armament of warriors. Chokin art is still being made today and the word "Chokin" refers to the technique or style of this art. This ancient craft dates back to the 12th century--copper was engraved and gilded over with precious metals such as 24k gold and silver. Collecting it can be easy and fun, if you know where to look, and relatively inexpensive for the beginner.

Instructions

  1. Collecting Chokin Art

    • 1

Make a budget using pen and paper. Collecting Chokin art can be relatively inexpensive as novelty pieces of this art are still being imported and manufactured today. Older pieces dating back to the 12th century will be ultra-expensive and should be left to the experienced collector. Starters should make a realistic budget of what they wish to spend.

Browse the phone book. Antique malls are a great source of finding vintage Chokin art, some still at reasonable prices. Most commonly found pieces are plates and vases and most for under $25.

    • 3

Use the Internet to help you find Chokin art. There are many importers of this art (direct from Japan) and some pieces are a must for new collectors. Current "great deal" prices for a six-to-eight- inch plate can be as low as $16 plus shipping and vases at $18 plus shipping.

Online auction sites are another source for new and vintage Chokin. Because so much of it was made, older pieces may be acquired at a very good price.

Use the Internet to check local garage sale, estate sales and flea market listings in your area. Chokin art may also be found at these places and searching can be a fun task for the whole family.
