Create a rough drawing of what you want the end product to look like. Draw a circle for the outline of the sphere and map out shapes that will become the light glimmer and the shadow. Select your colors, and use colored pencils to color in each part of the sphere image. Do not blend the colors. Redraw or refine the picture until you are satisfied. This will become the pattern you will use throughout the project.
Create the sphere outline stencil. Place tracing paper over the pattern and trace the outline of the sphere. Transfer the tracing paper over the blank stencil material. Tape the corners securely to the stencil material. Using a fine-point utility knife, carefully cut along the sphere outline, making sure that the blade is cutting through the blank stencil material as well as the tracing paper. Completely cut out the sphere shape and remove it from the stencil material.
Create the sphere shadow stencil. Place the tracing paper over your pattern and trace the outline of the shadow. Tape the tracing paper onto a second sheet of blank stencil material and cut along the outline of the sphere shadow shape. Remove the shape from the stencil.
Create the light glimmer stencil. Place the tracing paper over your pattern and trace the outline of the light glimmer. Transfer the tracing paper to a third blank sheet of stencil material and use the fine-point utility knife to cut along the outline of the light glimmer shape. Remove the glimmer shape from the stencil.
Tape the sphere stencil onto the surface you will paint on, using masking tape. Use a paintbrush or airbrush to completely fill in the stencil with paint. Let the paint dry before removing the stencil, to avoid smudging.
Place the shadow stencil onto the painting surface, lining it up to its correct location on the painted sphere. Use masking tape to securely fasten the stencil to the surface. Use the desired paint to fill in the vacant area of the shadow stencil. Allow the paint to dry before removing the stencil.
Line up the light glimmer stencil to its correct location in the sphere and tape the edges of the stencil to the painting surface. Use the desired paint color to fill in the stencil. Allow the paint to dry and remove the stencil to view your picture.
