How to Add Natural Light to an Art Studio

When creating art, it is important to be able to see every detail with ease. This makes the process run more smoothly, creating a more finely tuned piece. It also helps to avoid having to squint and strain your eyes. Natural lighting is the ideal light under which to work. It illuminates the art, presenting it as is without shadows or tricks of light that can be caused by artificial lighting. Natural light can be added to an art studio with a few tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dark curtains or shades from all windows in the studio.

    • 2

Install shutters in the windows that can be opened throughout the workday and closed at night.

    • 3

Place sheer curtains across the window. This will diffuse the harsh natural lights that can make working in the space difficult.

    • 4

Position any desks, easels and work areas directly in front of or underneath a window.

    • 5

Install a north-facing skylight in the ceiling over top of the work space. North light is more controlled than direct sunlight. The light values shift gradually throughout the day, allowing you to view work in the same manner, and not have it appear drastically different as the sun comes and goes. This is a more costly solution that requires building knowledge, but it creates a better working space in the long run.

    • 6

Place at least one mirror on every wall. This will reflect all incoming light inward at all times.
