Joan Miro created "Wall of the Moon" as part of a two-mural series that included "Wall of the Sun" for the UNESCO building in Paris in 1957. This mural is significant for his use of ceramic as the medium instead of paint on copper and masonite, collage, pastel and watercolor that he typically used. The completion of this mural sparked a new era in Miro's life, as he began to concentrate more on public and monumental works.
Although "Two Old Men Eating Soup" is not the only mural or painting the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya completed that garnered a lot of attention, it reflects his unique style. Accentuated by dark paints and pigments, "Two Old Men Eating Soup" was painted directly on a wall using a mixture of oil and paint. With quick and decisive strokes, Goya depicted two old men, as the title suggests, yet one appears to be alive, while the other seems to be a corpse. The living old man is the only lively color in the entire mural. The mural is currently on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (typically referred to as Joaquin Sorolla) became famous for creating works that depicted life in Spain. The Hispanic Society Museum is displaying the "Vision of Spain" mural in its Manhattan museum at time of publication. The mural is actually the largest painted work of Spain in modern history, consisting of 14 large panels, each measuring 230-by-11 1/2 feet. The mural took Sorolla eight years to complete; he used large paintbrushes, which you can see in the large brush strokes on its surface.
Pablo Picasso is probably the most recognizable and famous painter, not only in Spain, but around the world. The Spanish government commissioned the artist in 1937 to decorate an exhibition building for the World's Fair called the Spanish Pavilion. The result was a depiction of the violent bombing of Guernica -- the first aerial bombardment that attacked civilians. What is unusual about this mural is that it is painted in black and white. "Guernica" is on display in Spain at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.
