How to Combine Art & Poetry

Mixing different media can help an artist make a stronger statement and give multiple meanings to a piece of art. Combining poetry with photography, painting or sketching can create a work of art that functions on both visual and textual levels. Try adding text to a sketch, a phrase to a painting or a poem to your photography.

Instructions

  1. Painting or Sketching with Poetry

    • 1

Paint a scene or object, or sketch a scene or object with colored pencils or charcoal on paper. The setting can be anything from a meadow landscape to an urban sidewalk, the object anything from a simple coffee cup to a complex vine.

    • 2

If you are painting, allow the paint to dry before proceeding.

    • 3

Write a portion or a full poem directly onto the painting or sketch. The execution can be as subtle as a pencil-written sentence in the corner of the page or as bold as painting the words to cover part of the image.

    Photography with Poetry

    • 4

Take a picture of a scene or object of your choice using a digital camera.

    • 5

Upload the photo to your computer and open it in a photo editing program.

    • 6

Touch up any flaws in the photo such as redeye and crop to suit.

    • 7

Apply various filters and effects to the image if desired.

    • 8

Click the photo editing software's text box function.

    • 9

Drag and drop the size of your text box over your image. Using a segment of poetry rather than a full poem will make the text more manageable and easier to read.

    • 10

Change the font and color of the text as desired. Choosing a color that matches the image will subtly blend the poetry in the art, and choosing a color that contrasts will highlight the text in the art.
