How to Dispose of Tempera Paint

Tempera paint, often called poster paint by manufacturers, is a popular staple in elementary school classrooms because it's inexpensive and easy to clean up. Unlike hazardous oil-based paints that have to be carefully discarded or recycled in municipal sanitation centers, tempera is water-soluble, making it safe to dispose of at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse small amounts of tempera paint into the sink. This method of disposal works for cleaning brushes or washing palettes and containers.

    • 2

Leave larger amounts of paint in an unsealed container overnight, until it dries solid. Then simply throw it away.

    • 3

Throw unused dry tempera paint in the trash.

    • 4

Treat dry tempera that has already been mixed with water for use as you would tempera that was bought in liquid form.
