How to Build Heavy Duty Stretcher Bars for Canvas

When making stretcher bars for canvas the most important factor to consider is size. If the canvas is larger than 18 by 24 inches then you run into the possibility that the stretchers will warp over time. Using heavy-duty canvas bars made from cut 2-by-4s will help ensure the longevity of the painting.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-by-4-inch wood
  • Table saw
  • Wood pencil
  • Measuring Tape

Instructions

      Set the angle on the table saw to 45 degrees. Center the width of the 2-by-4 on the blade; take into account the thickness of the blade itself.

      Turn on the table saw and cut the board in half lengthwise. Turn off the saw when finished.

      Measure and mark on the wood the appropriate lengths you need for each side of the canvas.

      Use the hand saw to cut at a 90-degree angle where you made each mark and discard any extra pieces of wood.

      Change the angle on the hand saw to 45 degrees to the right. Cut the right corner of each remaining bar at a 45-degree angle.

      Change the angle on the hand saw to 45 degrees to the left. Cut off the left corners of the last bars.
