What does uncle Marcos make from the materials he brings back in enormous boxes house of spirits?

In the novel "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende, it is not Uncle Marcos who scavenges for materials. It is Pedro Tercero García who collects bottles and bits and pieces from the garbage dumps and junk shops.
