Learn what types of hoops are available. Most stitchery books illustrate these. In addition to standard round lap hoops, for large projects some crafters use an oval rug or quilting hoop, an artists' stretcher frame, a square frame or a standing frame.
Choose the hoop size best suited to your project, preferences and budget. Bigger hoops allow a bigger work area, but lap hoops, ranging from about 4 to 12 inches in diameter, are less bulky, more portable and less expensive.
Check catalogs, local craft stores and craft sections of discount department stores for hoop selections. Other possible sources for hoops are garage sales and thrift shops.
