How to Remove Oil Paint from Polyester

Oil-based paint is a slow-drying paint made up of particles of pigment that are suspended in a drying oil. To dissolve oil-based paint, a solvent or paint thinner can be used. Turpentine is a popular solvent used for thinning oil-based paints. Oil paint can be removed from polyester with turpentine and a few common household items.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. Open windows. Place rubber gloves on your hands to protect yourself from any skin irritation that may be caused by the turpentine.

    • 2

Lie the polyester fabric over a large bowl so that the stain is in the center.

    • 3

Empty half a cup of turpentine into a cup with a spout.

    • 4

Pour the turpentine over the stained area, allowing the excess liquid to fall into the bowl.

    • 5

Rinse the polyester fabric with water.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 to 5 until the paint is completely removed from the fabric.

    • 7

Apply laundry detergent to the area that was stained. Gently rub the detergent into the fabric with your fingers.

    • 8

Rinse polyester fabric with water. Wash it alone on the "heat" cycle.
