How to Use Oil Pastels Without Fingers

Smudge and blend oil pastel colors without getting anything on your fingers by using up a few additional art supplies. Natural chamois gives smudged oil pastel colors a soft textured appearance. Tortillons are narrow blending tools made of rolled paper with one end sharpened to a point. Wider, longer and more tightly wound paper blending tools called stumps come to a point at both ends. Complete an oil pastel work by choosing and correctly employing the right blending tool for each application.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your hands with thin latex gloves if you intend to completely protect them from all contact with the oil pastels or the residue they leave on the blending tools. Thin gloves allow you to have enough sensation of pressure to control the tools as you work.

    • 2

Fold in half and then tightly roll a 6-inch square or smaller scrap of natural chamois. The rolled chamois will look like a short cigar and be slightly rigid.

    • 3

Grip the rolled chamois about half an inch from one end with your fingers holding the seam, so it stays tightly wrapped. Twist or slide the end of the rolled chamois over the applied oil pastels to blend and smudge larger areas that require less precision. Unravel, unfold and roll the chamois back up to get a clean section of the natural cloth.

    • 4

Hold the paper blending stump about an half an inch behind the start of the taper at either end. Work the tip or side edge of a tapered end into oil pastels to smudge and blend them in sections of the art piece that require slightly more precision than you are able to get with a chamois.

    • 5

Grasp the small tortillon in your fingertips however you feel comfortable and have control. The narrow tip of this blending tool is ideal for small scale intricate blending work.

    • 6

Texturize the oil pastels by using silicone tools and hard erasers to smudge and stamp shapes into the color. A razor knife can be used to cut the hard eraser into custom shapes and edges.
