How to Mount Plexiglass on a Wooden Stretcher

Typically wood stretchers are covered with canvas for an artist to paint on. Occasionally, artists choose a different background for their artwork such as Plexiglass. Mounting Plexiglass on a wood stretcher involves a risk of both the Plexiglass and the stretcher cracking if it is not properly pre-drilled. Using Plexiglass as a background gives artists the options to layer their work with multiple depths or place a light source behind the frame to "pop" the visual appearance of their work.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the edge of the wood stretcher every 12 inches with the measuring tape, and make a mark with the permanent marker. Include a mark in each of the four corners. These will be guide marks for pre-drilling the holes.

    • 2

Repeat this process of measuring and marking on the Plexiglass so that when the Plexiglass is laid on the stretcher, all the marks line up.

    • 3

Drill holes where the marks are on the wood stretcher with the twist drill bit in the electric drill.

    • 4

Put on the respirator. Drill holes through the Plexiglass in the same manner.

    • 5

Line up the Plexiglass on top of the wood stretcher so all the holes are in the same place. Put a washer on the screw, and screw it into the hole. Repeat for each hole.
