How to Use Shiva Paint Sticks on Canvas

There is something special about painting with oils. Oil paints can have a deeper appearance than other paints, and many artists who work in oils dislike using other kinds of paint. Unfortunately, oil paints are also more expensive and more difficult to work with than other kinds of paint. Oil paint can take days to dry. Fortunately, oil paint sticks, like the popular Shiva Paintstiks can be used as a more convenient alternative to traditional oil paints.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel the skin off of the point of the paint stick. Paint sticks will develop a skin over them as the surface dries. Apply the color directly from the paint stick onto the canvas for a thick application.

    • 2

Apply a little turpentine to a brush and smooth out the applied paint for a thinner coating. You can also smudge some color from your paint stick onto the pallet and thin it out by applying some turpentine and mixing it.

    • 3

Smudge different colors you want to blend to your pallet and mix with you paint brush. Add some turpentine if you would like a thinner coat. Apply the mixture with a brush or paint wedge to your canvas.

Apply different colors over earlier applications after waiting a few hours for the first coat to dry. Paint from color sticks dries much faster than regular oil paints, but it still requires a few hours before applying other colors without it smudging and mixing.
