How to Make Leather Lanyards

Lanyards allow you to carry items easily and serve as a unique decoration. Lanyards can be used like the string to a pocket watch or they can be used as a necklace. Tie the end of a lanyard to an important item such as a whistle and thread the other end of the lanyard through your belt loops. To make your lanyard into a necklace, tie the ends of a lanyard through the lanyard loop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a strand of leather cord that is twice the length of the lanyard's desired length. Cut this cord using scissors. Cut another cord of the same exact length.

    • 2

Lie the strands of leather next to each other. Place a lanyard clip over the center of the strand of leather.

    • 3

Hold the lanyard so that all of the strings fall towards the ground. Label these strings as string 1, string 2, string 3, and string 4. String 1 should be the string on the far left and string 4 should be the string on the far right.

    • 4

Pull string 4 around the back of the strings, under string 2 and string 3. Pull it around, over string 2.

    • 5

Pull string 1 under string 2 and string 4. Pull it around, over string 4.

    • 6

Pull these strings taught and "re-label" the strings. Repeat the braiding process.

    • 7

Tie a tight overhand knot to secure your lanyard.
