What does the image of beast mean?

The Beast from the Sea (Revelation 13:1-18)

* Represents a political power that rises out of the Mediterranean like a wild beast (v. 1).

* Has the strength of a leopard, feet of a bear, mouth of a lion, and ten horns and seven heads (v. 2).

* Given authority by the Devil (v. 2).

* One head mortally wounded, but healed (v. 3).

* The world marvels at the beast and follows it (v. 3).

* Blasphemes against God, his authority, and his dwelling in heaven (vv. 5-6).

* Receives authority "over every tribe, people, tongue, and nation" (v. 7).

* All those "whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slaughtered” will "worship" the beast (v. 8).

* Calls for endurance on the part of the saints during his reign (v. 10).

The Image of the Beast (Revelation 13:14-15)

* Created by the Second Beast of the Earth under direction of the First Beast from the Sea.

* Made to speak so that those who refuse to "worship" "will be killed" (v. 15).

* Has authority to give breath to the first Beast which has been mortally wounded.

* Makes everyone receive this identifying emblem on their right hand or forehead or be unable to trade, buy, or sell (vv. 16-18).
