Visit public and private art galleries in your area as well as galleries located in large metro areas. Browse new art, talk with other collectors, speak with the curator about regulars with whom you may connect who share your interest in specific art genres.
Join a niche collector's club. Choose between international, domestic and local groups with a mission statement and a regular meeting schedule. To find these types of groups, read hobbyist-published literature and magazines and check newspaper lifestyle pages for club listings. Perhaps you can locate art leagues hosting benefits and fundraisers you can attend.
Go to conventions, symposiums, workshops and classes devoted to exploring the art genre(s) you collect. Conventions, in particular, offer a variety of opportunities to meet collectors in varied settings: on the exhibit floor, at workshops and during social events. For example, the 2010 Worldwide Art Collectors' Conference met in the Hamptons for three days of lectures, socializing and networking opportunities, including private tours for collectors.
Visit museums. Sign up for a seminar series where you will learn more about private and traveling collections and exhibits while meeting others equally interested in this art. Check also with local art leagues and libraries, as both are great resources for finding people who share your interest.
Tour estates and mansions that endowment trusts have opened for tours. Inspect private collections while locating other collectors who are as eager as you are to see art formerly available only to the wealthiest families. Miami's Vizcaya and California's Hearst Castle are two great places to meet other collectors. Additionally, if you're invited to view corporate collections, always say yes; you never know whom you will meet.
Take classes in art theory and practice. Include studio classes if you both appreciate and create art. Study art history and gain insights into the lives of artists while meeting others who share your interests. Find art collectors on websites dedicated to bringing together people interested in the same style or medium as the work you collect.
Travel the world to meet art collectors. Schedule stops at museums known for international collections---the Prado in Spain, the Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim in New York City and Catherine the Great's palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. These are all places you will surely encounter people whose passion for art knows no bounds.
