What do longhouses look like on the inside?

Longhouses are typically rectangular structures with a central passageway running the length of the house.

* The side the passage are individual living and work spaces.

* The area under the roof beyond the living spaces is typically used for storage.

Construction techniques vary depending on region, but some common features of longhouses include:

* A frame made of wood or other natural material.

* Walls made of wood, stone, or mud brick.

* A thatched roof.

* Wooden plank flooring made from the logs split in half.

The inside of a longhouse is typically dark and smoky, as fire was the main source of light and heat.

* Beds were usually made of animal hides or furs, and were often placed on raised platforms.

* Furniture was sparse and consisted mainly of stools, benches, and tables.

Longhouses were often shared by multiple families, and each family would have their own section of the house.

* The longhouse was the center of social life and activities, and was where meals were prepared, stories were told, and ceremonies were held.
